FIREWISE USA®
The Grove Street Fire Safe Council area is now officially recognized by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as a Firewise USA® Community.
- Firewise USA® is a national program supporting local communities’ efforts to reduce wildfire risks.
- After six years of documented mitigation work – fuel reduction, education, defensible space efforts - FireWise USA® status formally acknowledges that work according to a national standard.
- Firewise USA® recognition does not replace the Grove Street Fire Safe Council; it builds on the work we’ve already done.
WHY FIREWISE USA® RECOGNITION MATTERS
Insurance
3-year Action Plan
Annual Reporting
- Under California state “Safer from Wildfires” regulations, insurers must offer discounts for qualifying wildfire mitigation actions.
- Participation in a Firewise USA® Community is one of the qualifying actions.
- Firewise USA® status may help with discounts or insurability.
- But it does not guarantee coverage, lower premiums, or renewals.

3-year Action Plan
- To obtain recognition, we have committed to a 3-year Action Plan broken down by year that identifies and prioritizes actions to reduce wildfire risks, including:
- Education and outreach goals.
- Home hardening goals.
- Defensible space and fuel reduction goals.
- Evacuation planning and wildfire preparedness goals.
Annual Reporting
- To maintain our Firewise USA® recognition, we are required to track and report to the NFPA our community’s annual “investment” in wildfire safety.
- The “investment” may be your time or expenses incurred, and includes what many of you already do:
- Clearing vegetation.
- Chipping/hauling debris.
- Tree work and defensible space projects.
- Home hardening projects.
